Greenhouse Automation System

This greenhouse automation system was developed for the Agricultural Biotechnology Center (AgBC), University of Peradeniya, to bring IoT-based monitoring and control to the Center’s plant houses.

The project has two main objectives: to continuously collect environmental data from the plant houses, and to automatically control the environmental conditions inside them. Sensor readings gathered from the plant houses are made available through a web-based interface, allowing researchers to observe growing conditions remotely and maintain the controlled environments their experiments depend on.

As an industrial IoT and control-systems project, it combines embedded sensing and control hardware with web-based supervision — reducing the need for manual monitoring and providing reliable, round-the-clock oversight of the Center’s research greenhouses.

The outcomes of this research project were published in the paper “Internet of things (IoT) for smart agriculture: Assembling and assessment of a low-cost IoT system for polytunnels” in the PLOS ONE journal (2023). The paper is available here: 10.1371/journal.pone.0278440.
